Below, we’re sharing the first chapter of Aaron Johnson’s A Walk in Their Kicks: Literacy, Identity, and the Schooling of Young Black MalesThe chapter, entitled ‘His Story: The History of School and Literacy Development of African American Male’ focuses on key historical moments that have negatively impacted the success of literacy in Black Males. He discusses key social and cultural events such as the Jim Crow laws, The Great Migration, school desegregation, and school busing issues.
