Recently, there has been more of a consensus between researchers and policy makers about the importance of using a content-rich curriculum in elementary grades to help develop language comprehension, background knowledge, and academic vocabulary (Cabell & Hwang, 2020; Hwang & Duke, 2020; Tyner & Kabourek, 2020; Wexler, 2019). Developing a robust vocabulary and academic language are particularly important for English learners (Lesaux et al., 2014), who are a growing segment of the U.S. public school student population (U.S. Department of Education, 2020). However, teachers may not have the instructional tools to implement a high-quality curriculum that develops academic language.
