Students across the country are back in the classroom or heading there soon. Even though Covid hasn’t ended, many will find their schools gripped by a new and potentially longer lasting crisis: we have a teacher and staff shortage of about 300,000 across the U.S., according to estimates by the National Education Association. Add this to the fact that approximately 300,000 teachers have left the profession since the beginning of the pandemic. Unless we understand and respond to this crisis now, we will pay a hefty price for decades to come.
