Description+

Teacher as Curator provides a roadmap for using creative strategies to engage both educators and students in the learning process. Focusing on key qualities of culturally and linguistically responsive arts learning, chapters specifically demonstrate how arts integration strategies and formative assessment can be a catalyst for change in the classroom. Readers will be inspired by teachers and practitioners who have donned the role of curator to achieve significant results. Kindergarten–college educators will find research-based protocols and practices that they can translate into any educational setting. In digestible chapters, this resource provides a theoretical base for building artistic literacy into the curriculum and for developing multimodal opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of content.

Book Features:

  • Explores the role of curation in the classroom.
  • Highlights processes for innovation and multimodal learning.
  • Showcases the work of teachers from different subjects and grade levels.
  • Provides examples of integrated learning through lesson planning, curatorial maps, and learning stories.
  • Offers strategies that can deepen artistic literacy and engage students through formative assessment.

Reviews+

“Through seven chapters, (Donovan and Anderberg) offer numerous creative assessment strategies for suggested incorporation into the classroom for culturally responsive learning. The case for the process of curation and arts-based strategies in formative assessment provides a deeper understanding of the creative process for all learners.”

—CHOICE

“In Teacher as Curator: Formative Assessment and Arts-Based Strategies, Lisa Donovan and Sarah Anderberg deepen the artistry of teaching and offer methods for collecting and curating evidence of learning. By focusing and documenting decisions made in the classroom, the authors show the importance of mapping progress and sharing what really happens throughout a lesson sequence. The authors truly believe in the expertise of educators, and this book is about heightening and broadening that expertise. As those of us at the policy level work to realize a vision for innovation and creativity to transform our current education system, I am so grateful to these authors for elevating teacher and student voices and valuing the deep expertise of the educators whose partnerships are critical to our success.”
—Beth Lambert, director of innovative teaching and learning, Maine Department of Education

“Lisa Donovan and Sarah Anderberg's Teacher as Curator is a game changer. Their key focus on the roles that arts integration, creativity, and culturally relevant teaching play are crucial to our educational context. I especially found their emphasis on documentation, evaluation, research, and assessment wonderfully helpful in providing teachers and future teachers with tools to better their practice. The learning stories from the field are chock full of inspiration. I am really excited about this book—it is an important contribution to the field of education as a whole.”
—Merryl Goldberg, professor, California State University San Marcos

“Drawing upon the role of curators in museums who collect, document, and reflect on artifacts, Donovan and Anderberg argue effectively that applying curatorial practices to arts-integrated teaching and learning can result in creative lesson design and formative assessment methodologies that meet the needs of all learners.”
—Martha Barry McKenna, university professor and director, Center for Advanced Professional Studies, Lesley University
