Taffy E. Raphael is a professor of literacy education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research interests include comprehension and writing instruction, frameworks for literacy curriculum and instruction, and whole-school reform. She received the International Reading Association’s Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award in 1997 and the Literacy Research Association’s Oscar Causey Award for Lifetime Contributions to Literacy Research in 2008. Raphael served on the board of directors of the International Reading Association and the board of the Literacy Research Association, where she also served as treasurer and president. Raphael teaches courses in literacy pedagogy, theory and research, and seminars in literacy research design and literacy leadership.
