Dr. Kevin Kumashiro (https://www.kevinkumashiro.com) is an internationally recognized expert on educational policy, school reform, teacher preparation, and educational equity and social justice, with a wide-ranging list of accomplishments and awards as a scholar, educator, leader, and advocate.
In this presentation, Dr. Kumashiro draws on his newest book, "Surrendered," to highlight how the broader Left in the United States (progressives, liberals, Democrats, teacher unions, civil rights organizations) has long had the tendency to talk about problems in public education in ways that were framed by forces contrary to the goals of democracy and justice, and in so doing, to respond counterproductively. He explains when, why, and how this has happened, particularly regarding the insidious nature of so-called reforms, and dives into some of the biggest battles in education today, such as affirmative action, free speech and hate speech, bullying and violence, teacher shortages, and student debt.
