Suhanthie Motha is an assistant professor in the Department of English at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she teaches graduate classes in TESOL and applied linguistics. While she frequently feels conflicted about her participation in the project of teaching English, she more often than not believes in and holds hope for the possibility of teaching English in responsible and ethical ways. She was born in Sri Lanka and raised in various countries with complicated colonial histories, most notably Australia and Nouvelle Calédonie. Her work has been published in journals including TESOL Quarterly, Modern Language Journal, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies, TESL Canada Journal, Educational Practice and Theory, Language Teaching, and Peace and Change Journal and as chapters in several books. She serves on the editorial review board of TESOL Quarterly. Her next book theorizes the concept of desire in relation to English, race, and coloniality.
