Rachel A. Lotan

Rachel A. Lotan

Rachel A. Lotan is professor (Teaching) of education at Stanford University. With Elizabeth Cohen, she co-directed the Program for Complex Instruction beginning in 1986. Since 1999, she has been serving as the director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program. A former secondary school teacher and administrator, she earned advanced degrees in education and sociology at Stanford University.

Working with teachers in the United States and around the world, Rachel A. Lotan shared her knowledge and experiences in building equitable classrooms. She maintains that ensuring that all students in heterogeneous classrooms have access to academically challenging curricula, experience equal-status participation, and can successfully demonstrate their understandings and skills is a fundamental pedagogical and moral objective.
