Multicultural Education Series

James A. Banks, Editor

The major purpose of the Multicultural Education Series is to provide preservice educators, practicing educators, graduate students, scholars, and policymakers with an interrelated and comprehensive set of books that summarizes and analyzes important research, theory, and practice related to the education of ethnic, racial, cultural, and linguistic groups in the United States and the education of mainstream students about diversity.

The dimensions of multicultural education, developed by Banks and described in the Handbook of Research on Multicultural Education and in the Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education, provide the conceptual framework for the development of the publications in the Series. The dimensions are content integration, the knowledge construction process, prejudice reduction, equity pedagogy, and an empowering institutional culture and social structure. The books in the Multicultural Education Series provide research, theoretical, and practical knowledge about the behaviors and learning characteristics of students of color, language minority students, low-income students, and other minoritized population groups, such as LGBTQ youth.

Praise for this Series—

“The Multicultural Education Series, published under the masterful Editorship of James A. Banks, a giant in our field, is surely the most important corpus of scholarship on a defining topic of our times: education for a world that is ever-more interconnected, miniaturized, and fragile. In the era of super diversity and growing inequality, if we did not have the Banks Series we would have to invent it.”
—Marcelo M. Suárez-Orozco, Dean, UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies

“The Multicultural Education Series, edited by James Banks, is a work of first-class scholarship presented by a distinguished list of authors. Jim is to be commended for bringing significant and influential works to the field for the past 15 years.”
—Carl A. Grant, Hoefs-Bascom Professor, University of Wisconsin–Madison

“The Multicultural Education Series has consistently produced groundbreaking books that inform, challenge, and advance the field of multicultural education. I regularly use them in my courses, and I eagerly await each new volume.”
—Lauri Johnson, Boston College, Lynch School of Education

“Education scholars and practitioners alike owe Professor Banks a debt of gratitude for the intellectual vision, energy, and commitment he has brought to this project.”
—Margaret Smith Crocco, Teachers College, Columbia University

“This series is a major contribution to the field of multicultural education. The texts provide essential solutions to the complex problems that face educators, administrators, parents, and community members.”
—Valerie Ooka Pang, School of Teacher Education, San Diego State University
