Kent Koppelman earned his Ph.D. in 1979 from Iowa State University and accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. In 1988, Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction selected him as “Teacher Educator of the Year.” In addition to many conference presentations and journal publications, Dr. Koppelman wrote Values in the Key of Life: Making Harmony in the Human Community (2001). Pearson/Allyn & Bacon published his textbook, Understanding Human Differences: Multicultural Education for a Diverse America (2005, 2008, 2011). After Dr. Koppelman retired in 2007, Iowa State University presented him with the Lagomarcino Laureate Award for his career achievements. He has compiled and edited an anthology on diversity issues for Pearson/Allyn & Bacon entitled Perspectives on Diversity: Selected Readings on Diversity in America (2010). Dr. Koppelman and his wife Jan have been married for 40 years, and their daughter, Tess, is a broadcast journalist in Kansas City.
