Kelly M. Mackura

Middle school science teacher, Santa Rosa, California

Kelly M. Mackura is a ­middle school science teacher in Santa Rosa, California. She has taught middle and high school biology, earth science, and sheltered learning for over 20 years. She also holds an administrative services credential and an MA in education from Sonoma State University. She recently served as a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) for Santa Rosa City Schools to facilitate NGSS implementation. As a mentor of preser­vice science teachers, Mackura has acted as a lead teacher for multiple teacher education initiatives with Sonoma State. She developed components of the model unit discussed throughout this book as part of her culminating MA in education proj­ect to understand how to elicit students’ funds of knowledge, including families, to inform language- and literacy-rich science instruction.
