Elisabeth Trost-Shahata taught 4th-grade English language learners (ELLs) in the Chicago Public Schools for 12 years and is now a bilingual/ESL specialist for the district. She is also an adjunct lecturer at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her primary teaching interests lie in inspiring a love of reading and writing in students of all ages for whom English is a new language, especially refugee and newcomer ELLs. She also enjoys supporting preservice and inservice teachers as they improve their teaching of ELLs. She is a passionate advocate for bilingualism and biliteracy in our global age.
