Deanna Birdyshaw is currently on the faculty of the University of Michigan Teacher Education Program. Her undergraduate and graduate courses focus on literacy in the content areas and video analysis of classroom practices to improve secondary teacher preparation. Dr. Birdyshaw served for 2 years as the University of Michigan’s coordinator of secondary teacher education and currently cochairs the International Literacy Association Task Force on Teacher Preparation for Literacy Instruction. Dr. Birdyshaw also served as associate director of the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA) from 1999 to 2005. In addition to her work at the University of Michigan, Dr. Birdyshaw served as English language arts consultant for the state of Michigan and taught English and literacy to secondary students. Dr. Birdyshaw’s areas of research include the development of preservice teachers, disciplinary literacy, and schoolwide assessment systems.
