DESCRIPTION

An essential understanding of the uses and practices of algebra remains out of reach for many students. Worryingly, for those students who struggle, algebra often represents a "drop-off point" in their math education. In a new book, Making Algebra Meaningful: A Visual Approach to Math Literacy for All ⎋ (Teachers College Press, 2024), award-winning researcher Nicole L. Fonger addresses the issue of how to support all learners to experience algebra as meaningful.

In a free webinar for teachers, Dr. Fonger presents her highly visual approach to improving algebra literacy in secondary classrooms. Attendees will learn how to support students to fluently reason and represent algebraic expressions, equations, and functions; how to design algebra lessons that are culturally and historically responsive to students' experiences and social justice issues; and how to make connections among rigorous research in algebra education, teaching algebra, and leading ambitious, equitable, and antiracist visions for algebra education.

This webinar is for middle and high school algebra and precalculus teachers, researchers, teacher educators, and all others who wish to learn about creating and sustaining math instruction that's ambitious, meaningful, and effective.
