Book Talk: Teaching Hope and Resilience for Students Experiencing Trauma

January 14, 2021 | 5pm EST
Cost: Free

Huge numbers of our students are caught in storms of trauma—whether stemming from abuse, homelessness, poverty, discrimination, violent neighborhoods, or fears of school shootings or family deportations, and more recently the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Join authors Nancy Frey and Rachelle S. Savitz for a discussion of their book Teaching Hope and Resilience for Students Experiencing Trauma and an exploration of the ways in which educators can create emotionally safe classroom environments, including

  • The need for emotional check-ins among educators, and the need for educators to model and embed such behavior in their work every day;
  • How to integrate social and emotional learning into the school day, including how to build curriculum from an anti-racist lens;
  • And how to enact trauma-sensitivity beyond the classroom level to mobilize the school community as an agent of change.
