In A World Away from IEPs, a publication in the Disability, Culture, and Equity Series, Erin McCloskey (2022) tackles a subject that many special educators don’t entertain, much less talk about: how students with IEPs participate in afterschool activities, and what those activities look like for them. This is not a traditional educational text in the field, but it offers a window into the experiences of children with special education needs that many have dared not look in. She offers a glimpse into this outside world by following students who participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities, including a dojo, riding arena, theatre, and music studio, and uses their and their parents’ voices to weave this case study narrative.
