About the Press

For over a century, Teachers College Press has been committed to addressing the ideas that matter most to educators. Today, our publishing program carries on this tradition and seeks to open and expand the dialogue between theory and practice by:

  • Looking at education, learning, and teaching in diverse ways
  • Exploring the tension between the academy and the public school

Our list of publications includes books and materials of interest in all areas of education from infant/toddler to adult learning. We also publish works in related subjects like psychology, sociology and culture, history, philosophy, and women's studies. Our authors include seasoned practitioners and scholars as well as fresh new talent from around the world.

Many of our books cross disciplinary boundaries in ways that are always of interest and frequently provocative. Though sometimes controversial, our publishing decisions are supported by grounded research and reviewed by authorities in the field. Through our series editors, editorial advisory boards, and peer reviewers, we strive to ensure that what we publish deserves our readers' attention and contributes to deepening the understanding and improvement of the practice of education. Manuscript Submission Guidelines

Procedure (download as PDF):

  1. Send a prospectus describing the scope, content, length, audience, and competition for the book. Briefly explain why you are seeking to publish this project and indicate its significance for the audience. Please list education courses in which you think the book will be used.
  2. Include a table of contents, as well as a detailed chapter by chapter outline, including back matter such as appendixes, bibliographies, and the like.
  3. Include information about your marketing platform and activities, both current and planned, to promote the book to its readership. List the conferences where you regularly present. Do you belong to professional networks and organizations? Do you provide professional development services? Do you have materials or platforms, digital or otherwise, that could be used in marketing the work (for example, videos, podcasts, blogs, newsletters, listservs, etc.)?
  4. Indicate if there is to be art or tabular material and describe its nature and length; indicate if your manuscript will require permissions and releases.
  5. If possible, include the introduction and one or two sample chapters. If you do include the entire manuscript, please indicate in your cover letter the three chapters that you feel are most representative of your book idea as a whole.
  6. Include a list of eight to ten qualified potential peer reviewers for us to consider, and their email addresses and/or institutions, in case your project enters our peer review process. This is an important and necessary step before we contract any book at Teachers College Press.
  7. Include a CV.
  8. Please send all of the above, in duplicate, to the Acquisitions Editor at Teachers College Press, 1234 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027. You may also consult the Editorial Staff listing above these guidelines for information on each of our editors’ specific subject areas.
General Guidelines

All manuscripts must be typed double-space, on one side only, on good quality white paper with one-inch margins on all sides. For correct punctuation, capitalization, organization of material, usage and the like, we recommend the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition. Particular care must be taken with endnotes and bibliographies. In general, follow the APA author-date style described in their manual.

The Press does not publish dissertations per se; the requirements for an academic dissertation are quite different from those of a university press book. Consult The Thesis and the Book, Second Edition, edited by Harman and Montagnes (University of Toronto Press, 2003); Handbook for Academic Authors, Fifth Edition, by Beth Luey (Cambridge University Press, 2009); Revising Your Dissertation: Advice from Leading Editors, by Beth Luey (University of California Press, 2007); or From Dissertation to Book, by William P. Germano (University of Chicago Press, 2005) if you wish to revise your work.

Please allow six to eight weeks for processing.

When requesting permission please include a copy of the copyright page from the TC Press book. Also indicate the author’s name, the full title, the publication date, and the exact pages you wish to copy. Please review the full set of guidelines here before submitting a request.

For requests related to accessibility, please submit a letter via fax to (212) 678-4149. Please include the name of the school along with the TC Press book title, ISBN, and author and address it to Attn: Accessibility Requests.

ERS (Environment Rating Scales) Permissions

Request an Exam/Desk Copy

The Press will send on approval a copy of any book being considered for text adoption. The book will be sent to you for a 60-day examination period. An invoice will be included. Should you decide to adopt the book, it may be retained as a desk copy if the Press has been notified in writing. Examination copies not approved for adoption must be returned within 60 days, along with the invoice, marked RETURN. If you choose to keep the book for your personal use, simply return the invoice with your payment.

We do not provide exam/desk copies of our DVDs or videos. Customers may purchase these items and if unsatisfied, return them within 21 days. All returns must be in excellent condition. Please click here if you would like to complete a request online.
