Books in the series will provide educators, researchers, and policymakers with pathbreaking research-based knowledge and recommendations for practice that can transform both our understandings of how to educate minoritized students, as well as to create culturally responsive research based practices and policies that effectively address educational inequalities.

From Multi-tiered Systems of Support to the racialization of disabilities to proven strategies for inclusive classrooms, research and practice in the field is changing rapidly. The diversity of our nation’s schools will only continue to increase, and the need for educators to develop sound culturally responsive practices is greater than ever. Policymakers are eager to find ways to increase equitable outcomes for all learners. Researchers want to understand the ways in which culture, disability and other social markers intersect, and the impact of cultural and various forms of difference in educational outcomes. The Disability, Culture, and Equity Series will address this range of needs across the educational community, as it charts new ground in offering an interdisciplinary approach to disability.

<img src="https://teachers-college-press-us.imgix.net/authors/2653.jpg" width="200" height="200" alt="Alfredo J. While the fields of bilingual education and disability studies have been traditionally kept separate, Martínez-Álvarez argues that many of the constructs researchers and educators employ in their respective fields can be combined to improve instruction. This book establishes a dialogue among important constructs such as issues of assimilation and ableism, and the expansion of identity, agency, and humanistic pedagogies. It then looks at how these constructs can be used to better understand children who have been assigned inflexible labels that do not cohesively represent their bilingual/bicultural identities and their varied ways of learning. The text explores the limitations of categorizing children into “boxes,” particularly those of minoritized backgrounds, and focuses on actual practices that will engage and empower learners.

Book Features:

Combines the fields of bilingual education and disability studies so that bilingual students with disabilities can be understood and taught from a strengths-based perspective.

Includes activity invitations to help teachers create high-quality learning spaces.

Provides sample work from diverse elementary school–aged children, as well as children’s responses to the learning activity.

Proposes curriculum to expand what identity and agency look like in schools embracing more humanistic pedagogies.

Based on the author’s experience leading equity-focused technical assistance centers, this book details approaches to partnering with educators and other stakeholders to eliminate racial disproportionality in special education. How can DisCrit, as a critical and intersectional framework, be used to support and extend diverse forms of activism, expanded solidarities, and collective resistance? How can DisCrit inform and be augmented by engagements with other critical theories and modes of inquiry? Through illustrative case studies and a disability studies lens, author Erin McCloskey uses the voices of people with disabilities to show how these students progress creatively outside the classroom and school building—at the dojo, the riding arena, the theater stage, the music studio, and other community-centered spaces where disabled students can make choices about their learning, their bodies, and their goals. Balancing theory and practice, the book describes alternative learning spaces, demonstrates how disabled students learn there, and passes on the important lessons learned in each space. The ideas apply to students of all ages with a wide variety of disabilities.

Book Features:

Uses the voices of people with disabilities to promote alternative ways to think about learning and behavior in special education.

Presents rich case studies and briefer interludes to illustrate how disabled students are learning and thriving in surprising ways outside of school where they have opportunities to explore.

Distills important key takeaways from each case study through chapter sections of “lessons learned.”

Promotes informed discussion of the concepts in the book with questions at the end of each chapter.

Combines theory and practice to help readers put the concepts into action in a variety of settings with a variety of disabled students.

You’ve read the history and the background, now meet the families! This companion book to Meeting Families Where They Are traces the advocacy journeys of 12 caregivers across a range of racial, ethnic, social, disability, economic, and family identities. The stories reflect the unique lives, histories, and needs of each family, as well as the different approaches they employ to meet the needs of their children. Caregivers indicate when they began to advocate; describe how they continue their efforts across schools, medical offices, therapies, communities, and virtual spaces; and discuss how they adapt to changing social and health climates and educational delivery modes. While highlighting gaps and challenges across multiple systems, this book also recognizes “what’s working” with stories of true collaboration between practitioners and everyday people. While there have been marked improvements for students with disabilities, there is still concern that employment education and independent living outcomes are not equitable across groups of students. For example, adolescents of color are more likely to face exclusionary discipline procedures in school resulting in detention and court involvement which, in turn, can limit access to educational opportunities in inclusive settings. Recommending a shift toward strengths-based approaches to research and practice, Trainor explores how all stakeholders, including researchers and practitioners, can help shape equitable opportunities for youth with disabilities in transition. Transition by Design reframes disability, diversity, and equity during the transition from high school to adulthood.

Book Features:

Uses a unique theoretical framework in transition: cultivating a culture of practice.

Lays out an in-depth examination of the school-to-prison pipeline as a major issue in transition.

Examines health status and healthcare access issues relative to transition.

Calls for culturally responsive approaches to research by exposing the limitations of intervention methods and holes in the extant literature.

Audrey A.
